“Modern Tribes” was the title of Angel Chen’s fall collection, which marked the designer’s debut at Milan Fashion Week. She found inspiration in different parts of the world for her fun, youthful lineup, which offered cool options for both men and women. Chen looked at Australian patterns for the lizards decorating an oversized men’s waterproof parka, while African tribal woven motifs were reproduced on a women’s poncho top paired with cropped, flared Japanese denim pants. The designer celebrated Jean-Michel Basquiat with a graffiti pattern splashed on a women’s leather jacket, as well as a maxi parachute windbreaker. Metallic effects were introduced via the laminated fabrics crafted for biker jackets and hooded trenches, while women’s chubby colorful faux-fur coats were layered over tracksuits in baby pink and blue. Despite the multitude of influences and references, this was a coherent effort showing a strong point of view on street fashion.
